New Resignations in the Cabinet Hit Boris Johnson Hard

Boris Johnson is fighting for political survival after two of his top ministers attacked his leadership and resigned. Chancellor Rishi Sunak resigned by saying that the United Kingdom government should be run ‘properly, competently and seriously’ and Health Secretary Sajid Javid also quit just after the Sunak’s resignation. The crisis was followed by a flurry of junior ministers and aides. New chancellor Nadhim Zahawi urged his colleagues to unite and said PM Boris Johnson was focused on delivery.

United Kingdom’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson is struggling for political survival after two of his top ministers questioned Johnson’s leadership and resigned afterwards. Chancellor of Exchequer Rishi Sunak and Health Minister Sajid Javid resigned one after another and these turned into a series of resignations by resignations of a few junior ministers and deputies. But Johnson has been hit by further resignations, as he prepares for PMQs and grilling by senior MPs later. Will Quince, who was sent out to defend BoJo’s appointment of Chris Pincher as deputy chief whip, has resigned as an education minister. In addition, Laura Trott noted that the government lost trust and quit as a ministerial aide at the transport department.

Following all these recent developments, Neither Sajid Javid nor Rishi Sunak publicly, but their resignation letters on Tuesday were highly critical of the Prime Minister. Javid warned the leadership was not acting in the national interest, while Sunak said the public expected government to be conducted "properly, competently and seriously". Opposition party leaders urged cabinet ministers to join the pair and resign, and Labour leader Starmer said he was ready for a snap general election.

Boris Johnson is now braced for more resignations, perhaps not from the cabinet but the next rung down the ministerial ladder. For a little while, after two cabinet resignations, Westminster wondered what might happen next and so did the PM. Not in control of events, BoJo was ringing around the rest of his cabinet to work out if they were still with him.
