Biden-Putin summit

US President Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed Ukraine and bilateral relations in a video call that lasted more than two hours on Tuesday.

Biden warned Putin that if Russia invaded Ukraine, the United States and its partners would impose unprecedented sanctions and provide additional weapons to the Ukrainians.

Russia's military activity on the Ukrainian border has triggered alarms from the US and its European allies about a possible large-scale Russian invasion in early 2022. "Things we did not do in 2014 we are prepared to do now," Biden told Putin, according to US National Security adviser Sullivan.

Sullivan said Biden talked with leaders of France, Germany, Italy and Britain before and after his meeting with Putin and will speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday.

Shortly after the meeting ended, the US Congress published the text of the annual defense bill, which includes $300 million in security assistance to Ukraine.

Russian gas

A senior US official told members of Congress that US officials had a common understanding with Germany that it would shut down the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline if Russia Ukraine invaded.

The White House said Germany has made commitments regarding the Nord Stream 2 pipeline in case of aggressive actions by Russia.

US national security adviser Jake Sullivan said that the fact that gas has not yet flowed from Nord Stream 2, of which Russian gas giant Gazprom is a major partner, is a trump card for the West against Putin.

US stocks

Stocks bounced for the second day of the week, continuing to rebound from recent hard losses as investors overcame potential economic fears of the omicron variant of the coronavirus.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 492.40 points, or 1.4%, to 35,719.43. The S&P 500 rose 2.07% to 4,686.75, in its best performance since March 1. The Nasdaq Composite led the market rally, up 3% to 15,686.92.
